I wish somebody would do that. I feel like it’s supposed to be the Attorney General’s job, and we rarely get one that actually takes it seriously. The issue seems to be that we don’t have a good way to keep politics out of that job. If the President appoints an AG, the AG feels indebted to the President. If the people vote for one, then all the candidates run as members of a party. Maybe the most democratic approach would be to have an election for the AG, but prohibit political parties from being involved. We’d have to overturn Citizens United for that rule to mean anything, but of course that needs to happen anyway.
